Hi Reader, I’m thrilled to share some big news with you: starting January 20, I’m migrating this newsletter to Substack as a new project, Rebel Leaders! You don’t have to do anything; I'll be importing my list this week so you’ll automatically receive my first post when it’s released. But I wanted to give you a little preview of what’s coming and why I’m making this shift. As many of you know, my work with mothers, including my Rebel Mothers podcast, was born out of my desire to challenge the patriarchal expectations of modern motherhood. Over the years, we’ve explored what it means to mother against the grain and the ways care work shapes our society. And I am still in the world of motherhood advocacy in my role on the board of IAMAS; supporting mothers will always be a priority of mine. But as I’ve grown, so has my focus. Rebel Leaders will build on that foundation, expanding the conversation to amplify who gets to count as a leader, and redefining what successful leadership means. Leadership is political, and I don't mean that just because every president we've ever had has been a man. Systemic oppression has shaped outdated leadership norms and it's time we change the narrative to uplift bold, diverse voices and create radical change. The first post will drop on Monday, January 20 (because I suspect there are many of us who would rather be doing literally anything else besides watching the Presidential inauguration.) Here’s a little preview of the first post: Leadership isn’t about titles or authority. Leadership is about how we align our actions with our values, or the way we inspire others to positive change, or the way we push back against dominant narratives that don’t serve to uplift humanity.
We need a paradigm shift to redefine who gets to be a leader and a creative reimagining of what leadership can look like. And that’s what Rebel Leaders will do, by shining a light on the lessons and stories from people who are not playing it safe inside the margins: activist, artists, writers, and leaders who are antiracist, queer, feminist, spiritual, eco-conscious, and others who are unapologetically decolonizing the systems that no longer serve us.
I'm really excited about the Substack model for encouraging collaboration and community, so here’s how it’s going to work: I’ll release a new post every week that all subscribers will have access to for free. For those of you who want to take the work deeper, I’m also offering a paid subscription option which will get you the ability to leave comments, participate in community discussions, and access exclusive content and events. I want this to be a collaborative space where we can exchange ideas, build community, and redefine leadership together. I can’t wait to co-create this next chapter with you! ✨ February 20 EventDon't forget to join me on Thursday, February 20 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm CT for From Burnout to Balance: Leadership Strategies for Working Mothers, offered to the public for free by NextGroup. This workshop offers a fresh approach to achieving sustainable work-life integration, designed for ambitious women who want to thrive both at work and home. We’ll start with an acknowledgment of the pressures working mothers face today, then move beyond the usual talking points of time management and boundary-setting to explore unique strategies that embrace imperfection, tap into your natural strengths, and reduce stress. Participants will leave with practical tips to prioritize what matters, lead with presence, and cultivate a sense of balance. I want to acknowledge that the new direction might not resonate with everyone. If you’ve followed me for motherhood content and feel that Rebel Leaders isn’t the right fit for you, I completely understand. You can unsubscribe anytime, and there are no hard feelings. This shift feels deeply aligned for me, but it’s important to honor where you are too! |

You know how, when you buy a blue car, all of a sudden you see all the blue cars on the road? Apparently this phenomenon has a name, it’s the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or frequency illusion. It occurs when something you've just noticed or learned about suddenly seems to appear everywhere. It's not that the thing is actually more common, but rather that your awareness of it has increased, making it more noticeable. THIS IS MY LIFE RIGHT NOW. (No, I didn’t buy a blue car, but I've always WANTED...
Hey Reader! It's Susie here, and I've got some exciting updates to share with you all as we head into the summer months. As you may have heard on today’s podcast episode, Raising Boys in a Patriarchal Society, this will be the last full episode of Rebel Mothers before I take a break for summer! I’ll release another short episode next week to let listeners know what I’ll be up to this summer, but I wanted to let you all know first. First things first, I'm thrilled to announce that next week...
Hi Reader, Last week on the Rebel Mothers podcast, we discussed boundaries in motherhood and I shared a few questions that I have when thinking about boundaries: How do we maintain boundaries without shutting people out? If humans need MORE connection, what role do boundaries have? Is there necessarily a conflict between the good of the individual and the good of the collective? And if so, are boundaries the way to go about solving that? How much is our obsession with boundaries influenced by...
