Why are boundaries such a hot topic in motherhood?

Hi Reader,

Last week on the Rebel Mothers podcast, we discussed boundaries in motherhood and I shared a few questions that I have when thinking about boundaries:

  • How do we maintain boundaries without shutting people out?
  • If humans need MORE connection, what role do boundaries have?
  • Is there necessarily a conflict between the good of the individual and the good of the collective? And if so, are boundaries the way to go about solving that?
  • How much is our obsession with boundaries influenced by the fact that we live in the US, a land that has been divided into private, ownable lots that require boundaries to clearly mark “my land” and “your land?”
  • How can I set personal boundaries with my children, who at one point in their existence were literally a part of my body?
  • What places do healthy boundaries and personal agency have in the realm of motherhood?

I don’t have all the answers, but I’m going to keep asking the questions and I'd love to hear what YOU think!

Radical Mother Love

Next episode, in honor of Valentine’s Day, is all about “Radical Mother Love.” A mother’s love is often romanticized and idealized, but really, radical mother love is an opportunity to challenge traditional motherhood norms and dismantle larger systems of oppression. The discussion ranges from expanding the definition of motherhood beyond the normative mother and family to embracing the complexities of maternal ambivalence and the radical nature of mother love in uplifting and supporting all children and families. 💕

Hi Reader, I’m thrilled to share some big news with you: starting January 20, I’m migrating this newsletter to Substack as a new project, Rebel Leaders! You don’t have to do anything; I'll be importing my list this week so you’ll automatically receive my first post when it’s released. But I wanted to give you a little preview of what’s coming and why I’m making this shift. As many of you know, my work with mothers, including my Rebel Mothers podcast, was born out of my desire to challenge the...

You know how, when you buy a blue car, all of a sudden you see all the blue cars on the road? Apparently this phenomenon has a name, it’s the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or frequency illusion. It occurs when something you've just noticed or learned about suddenly seems to appear everywhere. It's not that the thing is actually more common, but rather that your awareness of it has increased, making it more noticeable. THIS IS MY LIFE RIGHT NOW. (No, I didn’t buy a blue car, but I've always WANTED...

Hey Reader! It's Susie here, and I've got some exciting updates to share with you all as we head into the summer months. As you may have heard on today’s podcast episode, Raising Boys in a Patriarchal Society, this will be the last full episode of Rebel Mothers before I take a break for summer! I’ll release another short episode next week to let listeners know what I’ll be up to this summer, but I wanted to let you all know first. First things first, I'm thrilled to announce that next week...
