Reclaiming your motherline

Hi Reader!

When I was deep in my mothering crisis (questioning why I felt like my work had no value, why I felt so invisible in the world, and why motherhood was so freaking hard), I knew that in order to go forward, I had to start by looking back. I wanted to look back at all the unconscious lessons I had learned while growing up, recognize the conditioning I had absorbed about what it meant to be a woman and mother, and uncover deeply held biases.

(Sometimes I wish I had just taken up gardening.)

This work started with exploring the stories of my motherline - talking to my mom about her experiences as a mother, listening to her tell stories of my grandmothers, and my great-grandmothers. I did research on Ancestry.com, looked up old yearbooks to find pictures of my grandmothers, had imaginary conversations with my female ancestors during long walks, drove out to visit my great-grandparents' gravestone.

“We vibrate to the rhythms of our mother’s blood before she herself is born, and this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother.” - Layne Redmond, When The Drummers Were Women

And it really helped. I was able to discover patterns and similarities in our lives, which made me feel less alone and also made me feel like I understood myself a little better. I was able to give myself some grace with decisions I had made in my life, and hold my mom and grandma more tenderly in my heart.

All this to say, learning how to recover the stories of your motherline can be a powerful practice in self-actualization; learning about your past helps you have a clearer idea of where you are in the present.

Hi Reader, I’m thrilled to share some big news with you: starting January 20, I’m migrating this newsletter to Substack as a new project, Rebel Leaders! You don’t have to do anything; I'll be importing my list this week so you’ll automatically receive my first post when it’s released. But I wanted to give you a little preview of what’s coming and why I’m making this shift. As many of you know, my work with mothers, including my Rebel Mothers podcast, was born out of my desire to challenge the...

You know how, when you buy a blue car, all of a sudden you see all the blue cars on the road? Apparently this phenomenon has a name, it’s the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or frequency illusion. It occurs when something you've just noticed or learned about suddenly seems to appear everywhere. It's not that the thing is actually more common, but rather that your awareness of it has increased, making it more noticeable. THIS IS MY LIFE RIGHT NOW. (No, I didn’t buy a blue car, but I've always WANTED...

Hey Reader! It's Susie here, and I've got some exciting updates to share with you all as we head into the summer months. First things first, I'm thrilled to announce that next week...
