Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines ❤️‍🔥

Hi Reader,

There is a quote that I refer to freqeuently in my work:

"In order to collectively figure out how to sustain and support our evolving species, in order to participate in and demand a society where people help to create each other instead of too ofern destroying each other, we need to look at the practice of creating, nurturing, affirming, and supporting life that we call mothering." ~Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines

This is it. This is what mothering is all about.

The activist and scholar bell hooks observed that the homeplace was a site of revolution. I believe it is time to re-examine motherhood as a socially constructed institution, so that we might begin to re-define motherhood as a site of personal liberation for the mother and social justice revolution for the world.

I picked up the book Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines a few years ago, and was moved by all the different ways the various authors and contributers reflected this idea of motherhood as a site of personal liberation back to me. As a collection of essays, poetry, and art, it's the kind of book that can fall open to any page and still inspire and delight (an excellent choice for busy moms who may not have the kind of focused attention required for some books!)

My friend Amanda Radan and I are hosting a live discussion this afternoon about the book, but also about this idea of the revolutionary mothering as well. If this is a topic that interests you, we’d love to have you join us!

"Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Frontlines is an anthology that centers mothers of color and marginalized mothers’ voices—women who are in a world of necessary transformation. The challenges faced by movements working for antiviolence, anti-imperialist, and queer liberation, as well as racial, economic, reproductive, gender, and food justice are the same challenges that marginalized mothers face every day. Motivated to create spaces for this discourse because of the authors’ passionate belief in the power of a radical conversation about mothering, they have become the go-to people for cutting-edge inspired work on this topic for an overlapping committed audience of activists, scholars, and writers. Revolutionary Mothering is a movement-shifting anthology committed to birthing new worlds, full of faith and hope for what we can raise up together."

To join this free conversation, visit the Mother Circle Book Club event page: April Book Club - Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines and click Register. We’ll be meeting today at 2:00 pm ET / 11:00 am PT and I hope to see you there!

In mothering solidarity,

Susie Fishleder

PS. (Don't worry if you haven't read the book, if you're at all interested in discussing the work of mothering, I promise you'll want to be there!)

Hi Reader, I’m thrilled to share some big news with you: starting January 20, I’m migrating this newsletter to Substack as a new project, Rebel Leaders! You don’t have to do anything; I'll be importing my list this week so you’ll automatically receive my first post when it’s released. But I wanted to give you a little preview of what’s coming and why I’m making this shift. As many of you know, my work with mothers, including my Rebel Mothers podcast, was born out of my desire to challenge the...

You know how, when you buy a blue car, all of a sudden you see all the blue cars on the road? Apparently this phenomenon has a name, it’s the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or frequency illusion. It occurs when something you've just noticed or learned about suddenly seems to appear everywhere. It's not that the thing is actually more common, but rather that your awareness of it has increased, making it more noticeable. THIS IS MY LIFE RIGHT NOW. (No, I didn’t buy a blue car, but I've always WANTED...

Hey Reader! It's Susie here, and I've got some exciting updates to share with you all as we head into the summer months. As you may have heard on today’s podcast episode, Raising Boys in a Patriarchal Society, this will be the last full episode of Rebel Mothers before I take a break for summer! I’ll release another short episode next week to let listeners know what I’ll be up to this summer, but I wanted to let you all know first. First things first, I'm thrilled to announce that next week...
